Considering adopting a rescue Hahn's macaw
Been thinking about adopting a rescue instead of buying from a breeder. Any experiences with rescue birds in Ontario? What should I expect in terms of behavioral challenges? Which rescue organizations do you recommend?
Okay but counterpoint — what about birds that are the complete opposite? My Hahn's macaw breaks every rule lol.
My Hahn's macaw did this too! Turned out it was because of a dietary deficiency, especially calcium or vitamin A. Once I addressed that, everything went back to normal.
There's a great little shop in the Danforth that specializes in parrot supplies. Way better selection than the big chains.
I switched to Zupreem last year and haven't looked back. My Hahn's macaw's feathers have never looked better.
So I had this exact problem about a year ago. Let me share what I learned. The key thing is switching from seed to Harrison's pellets gradually over 2 weeks. A lot of people also recommend reading "The Parrot Problem Solver" by Barbara Heidenreich. My avian vet in Scarborough also suggested checking for dry winter air from forced-air heating which can sometimes be an underlying factor. Good luck — feel free to DM me if you have questions!
One thing that really helped was putting a bird lamp on a 12/12 timer to simulate natural daylight cycles. Give it a try — can't hurt!
