One year ago today I brought home a terrified rescue parrotlet. Noodle wouldn't come out of the cage, bit anyone who came near, and screamed bloody murder at everything. Today? They fly to my shoulder the second I open the cage, give kisses, and even tolerate my partner. Rescue birds CAN recover. It just takes time.

Did this start suddenly or was it gradual? When my blue and gold macaw did this it turned out to be not enough quality sleep — they need 10-12 hours uninterrupted.

I've done a ton of research on this because my lineolated parakeet had the same issue. Here's what I learned: the most common cause is molting — they get uncomfortable and cranky. What worked for us was spending at minimum 2 hours of supervised out-of-cage time daily. I also started adding more variety in perch textures and sizes and noticed improvement within a week. It's a process but it gets better.

I actually disagree with this. In my experience with my Amazon parrot, the opposite was true. But I know every bird is different.

Dealt with this for months. What finally worked was changing their sleep schedule and just being really patient. They come around eventually.

How old is your bird? That might explain it — my sun conure went through something similar around 5 years.

One thing that really helped was introducing new foods by eating them in front of the bird — monkey see monkey do. Give it a try — can't hurt!
